The Artist

Hi, I’m Olivier Xavier. I’m a Dutch romantic, professional artist, cinematographer, photographer, composer, videographer and songwriter. Since the year 2000 i started writing poems. In 2011 I published my first poetry book.

Almost everyday I create a work of art: a painting, a film, a photo, a piano composition, a poem, a textual poem for a song, or a computer drawing.

As a professional artist, I am developing my skills every day in which I emphatically do not focus on 1 discipline within the field of fine arts sciences and instead take on a new challenge each and every season.

”Only sometimes, during falconry, there is covert time when the noble eagles can fly away with the courtly masks, so that intense feelings of mutual infatuation have a place, secretly and only for a moment.”

Olivier Xavier, oktober 2021

Courtly love occurred exclusively in the upper classes and involved the admiration of a nobleman or knight for an unattainable, usually married, woman. In most cases it was a platonic relationship.

This definition of courtly love says exactly what sets me, Olivier Xavier, apart from other visual artists. I am a world champion of courtly love and therefore call myself a romantic. One day I do hope ‘she chooses me. ‘She’, is my muse. ‘She’ inspires and stimulates to create. ‘She’ is my soul mate. But unreachable for too long🤔 Therefore, I die a slow death mentally, which does have a positive influence on my creation process.

Besides the theme of courtly love, I get my inspiration from the brilliant artist Marcel Wanders, the PopArt of Andy Warhol, the music of Herman Brood, Mozart, John Lennon, Elton John, Piet Paaltjens, P.A. De Genestet and my intense urge to capture the perfect composition, whether in image or sound.

It is my mission to create contemporary art with a focus on the beauty of Love, Connection and Harmony, celebrating the joyous life to escape the (rock hard) hard reality for a while. Sometimes my art is also an indictment of the injustice in the over-generalized society where art grants are based solely on unjust policies. Government policies undermine a climate of free thought and free expression, while this is essential for the free creation of visual art. But fair is fair: an excellent artist doesn’t need a grant and operates purely autonomously. And that’s the way it should be!

Life is often raw and rough. The pain I experience as a result, I translate into beauty, emotion, alienation, through a drawing, a (manipulated) photograph, a song with composition or a poem. With so much diversity in art expression, you might say I don’t have a central focus. But I do! My focus for each period is exactly where I want it to be. In that sense, as an artist, I am trying to evolve in the direction of the “Homo Universalis. As an artist, I thrive on a high degree of variety where I seek the depth per concept and thereby make a philosophical consideration of Rationality VS Reasonableness in our society. Does the ‘rules are rules’ principle (Aristotle) weigh more heavily in society today than there may be reasons to make an exception to these rules, for example on Moral grounds (Plato)? Or can our governmental system no longer cope with this in an administrational way? Do you want to live in a “computer says no” society?

Escapism: Fleeing into a fantasy world and creating visually or auditively. Because by doing so, so many points of light are created in the darkness of existence, that those points of light together form a great sun that dispels the darkness, if only momentarily!
